Umrah 2026–2027: staying connected in Makkah and Madinah

How much data pilgrims need, why to install before you fly, and how to keep the family group connected around the Haram.

During Umrah your phone does a lot of quiet work: the Nusuk app for permits, maps between the hotel and the Haram, the group WhatsApp, and video calls home. Having data the moment you land in Jeddah or Madinah removes one worry from a very special trip.

Networks in Saudi Arabia

The three Saudi operators are STC, Mobily and Zain. All of them have strong 4G/5G in Makkah and Madinah, including near the Haram. At peak prayer times the networks get very busy, so messages may be slow for a few minutes — this is normal for everyone.

How much data for Umrah?

  • 7–10 days, messages and maps: 3–5 GB.
  • Daily video calls with family: 10 GB.
  • Sharing internet with parents or children: 20 GB or unlimited.

Before you leave home

  1. Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi and keep your home SIM on for SMS from your bank.
  2. Log in to Nusuk at home; one-time codes are easier to receive there.
  3. Agree on a meeting point with your group in case phones are slow at peak times.
